My name is John Krajewski, I’m a game designer and founder of Strange Loop Games, where we’re working to build a connected suite of online world games that reach beyond entertainment. I believe games are the most important and powerful medium we have, with many untapped benefits beyond entertainment, and our studio is focused on exploring and building those possibilities. Before founding Strange Loop in 2009, I worked in the console game industry at Electronic Arts and Midway, building AAA titles like Lord of the Ring and Batman.
Eco is an online game where players must collaborate to build a civilization in a world where everything they do affects the environment. All resources come from a simulated ecosystem, with thousands of plants and animals simulating 24/7. Work together through the player-run government and economy to build the technology to stop a meteor on a collision course with the planet, without polluting the world and killing it off in the process before that even happens.
Eco, which was funded by the US Department of Education, is the first in a suite of virtual worlds we are planning to create, each connected to every other, and requiring the application of overlapping real-world knowledge. Each world is a social environment where players will need to collaborate, and structure the social rules that allow them to do so. These games are build to provide a context to student learning, answering the question ‘when am I going to use the use this’ using the self-driven engagement of modern video games.
Our long-term goal is to build out a universe of dozens of connected worlds covering all subjects taught in school K-12, offering a comprehensive system played outside of school that provides social application for all of a student’s learning.
